Concepts of Hardware & Software:

HARDWARE:   

                            Hardware represents the physical and tangible components of the computer, i.e. the components that  can be seen and touched.                                                                                                                                                                   Examples of hardware are following: 

•  Input devices:- Keyboard, Mouse etc. 
• Output devices:- Printer, Monitor etc.  
• Secondary storage devices:- Hard disk, CD, DVD etc.   
• Internal components:- CPU, Motherboard, RAM etc.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    

                       

SOFTWARE: 

                           Software is a set of programs, which are designed to perform a well-defined function. A program is a  sequence of instructions written to solve a particular problem.                                                                                                             There are two types of software:    

1. system Software

2. Application software  

* System Software:-

                                     System software is type of computer program that is designed to run a computer's hardware and application programs. If we think of the computer system as a layered model, the system software is the interface between the hardware and user applications. Some examples of system software are Operating System, Compilers, Interpreter, Assemblers.

    

Features of system Software are the following:

• Close to system.
• Fast in speed.
• Difficult to understand.
• Difficult to design.
• Less interactive.
• smaller in size.
• difficult to manipulate.
• Generally written in low-level language.                                

*Application Software:-

                                              Application software is a computer programs that allow users to perform specific tasks. These programs are commonly referred to as "apps" and are usually completely self-contained and commercially produced. Some examples of application software are Pay roll Software, Student Record Software, Inventory management Software, Income Tax Software, Microsoft Word, Microsoft  Excel etc.

Features of Application Software are the followings:

• It is closer to user.
• It is easy to design.
• More attractive.
• Slow in speed.
• Generally written in high-level language.
• easy to understand.
• Easy to manipulate and use.

Relationship between hardware and Software:-

• Mutually dependent. Both of them must work together to make computer produce as useful output.
• Software can't be utilized  without supporting of hardware.
• Hardware is one timer expense.
• Software development is very expensive and is a continuing expense.
• Software acts as interface between the user and hardware.
